JUAN PABLO DUARTE LIBRARY

Juan Pablo Duarte

The Juan Pablo Duarte Library of the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic was set up as a Division in 1947, at the same time the bank was established. At that time it was a division of the Department of Economic Research, and its only objective was to offer support to the Bank’s technical staff. In 1978, the Central Bank Library was first opened to the public.

On February 15,1985, by means of the 18th Resolution of the Monetary Board, the Library was elevated to the category of Department. In 1993, structural changes were implemented that merged the Library with the Numismatic and Philatelic Museum to form the Cultural Department, in compliance with the 32nd Resolution of February 25 of that year.

OBJECTIVE

To develop and maintain a system of bibliographic and documentary information to meet the information requirements and bibliographic needs of researchers, professionals, and the general public.

COLLECTIONS

The Library includes five collections. Each collection has a physically separate archive supported by computerized databases to facilitate access.

  • Books on economics and related disciplines
  • Periodicals specialized in socio-economics
  • Publications from the IMF and IDB
  • Complete collections of the national newspapers in micro-formats
  • Reference works: dictionaries, encyclopedias, yearbooks, etc.

 

AREAS OF SPECIALIZATION

The Library comprises wide areas of specialization linked to the general areas of economics and finance.

  • Economics and development; socio-economic conditions; development policies; development programs.Library
  • Funding; international banking; commercial banking; development banks; investment banks; agricultural banks.
  • Economic cooperation; economic integration; international and regional cooperation; industrial cooperation.
  • Economic legislation; fiscal legislation; monetary legislation; tax legislation.
  • Economic statistics; socio-economic indicators.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES

In order to make the Library’s bibliographic resources available to institutional users and the general public, the Library offers the following informational products and services:

  • Information alert service by means of the constant provision of documents.
  • Compilation of short specialized bibliographies upon request of Bank staff.
  • Access to international documentation through the ALIDE (Latin American Financial Development Institution Association) Information Network.
  • Consultations with regard to any material in the Library’s reading room, as well as orientation for obtaining documents within the scope of the Library’s subject areas.
  • Access to information contained in micro-formatted documents by means of a modern reader-printer.
  • Document copying.
  • Preparation and distribution of a quarterly bulletin on new acquisitions of books and monographs and the table of contents of the principal specialized periodical publications.
  • Compilation, editing, and distribution of the "Dominican Economic Bibliography".

 

ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS

The Library programs and develops a variety of activities directed to employees and the general public, among which are the following:

  • Promotion of intellectual works, regardless of their nature.
  • Active participation in the International Book Fair, where publications edited or published under the auspices of the Bank are exhibited.
  • Organization of the "Juan Pablo Duarte Library Annual Contest", which is oriented toward the field of economics.
  • Availability of our Main Hall free of charge for the introduction of books newly published by the Bank or by Dominican authors.
  • Participation in the organization of talks, courses, and conferences that contribute to the enrichment of our cultural values and identity.

HOURS OF OPERATION

The Library is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8:30 A.M. until 4:30 P.M.

Photocopy service is available from 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
